On the 30th of May 2023, the Seminar “Business in conflict and post-conflict situations: towards a responsible business conduct” organised by Laura Íñigo Álvarez took place at NOVA School of Law. It featured Olena Uvarova, Dr. Jelena Aparac, Jeremy Sarkin, Riccardo Riva as well as Laura Íñigo Álvarez, with opening notes by Margarida Lima Rego and Claire Bright, and concluding remarks by Felipe Pathé Duarte.
The seminar addressed the notion of heightened human rights due diligence in conflict-affected areas with a particular focus on Ukraine, the increased use of PMSCs by extractive industries and the challenges posed to accountability and the rule of law, the issue of disengagement and its human rights impacts, as well as the need to find new paradigms in international law in order to increase the accountability for corporate abuses.
