Class on the evolving field of Business and Human Rights

On the 20th of May 2026, the NOVA BHRE gave a class at Human Rights Clinic (Clínica de Direitos Humanos) of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR), directed by Danielle Pamplona in Curitiba, Brazil.

Our Director, Claire Bright, together with Salvador Herencia-Carrasco, led a discussion on the evolving field of Business and Human Rights, exploring the foundations of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights , the respective roles of States and corporations, and the ongoing challenges of implementing the “protect, respect and remedy” framework.

The class also addressed critical perspectives from the Global South, questioning the effectiveness of voluntary corporate standards and examining the risks and opportunities posed by emerging European regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

Finally, the discussion focused on the implications of the CSDDD for Latin America, including impacts on regional supply chains, access to remedy for victims of human rights abuses, and the future of global governance in Business and Human Rights.
