Webinar series “Business and Human Rights in Latin America: Developments, Challenges and Opportunities (“Derechos humanos y empresas en América Latina: desarrollos, desafíos y oportunidades”)
This webinar series was co-organized by NOVA BHRE and the Instituto de Derechos Humanos y Empresas of the Universidad de Monterrey, in collaboration with the Academia Latinoamericana de Derechos Humanos y Empresas and the Teaching Business and Human Rights Forum. It counted with the participation of academics and researchers from different countries in Latin America, including Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. The sessions were carried out in Spanish and Portuguese.
This series of webinars aimed to examine the current and future regulatory landscape on human rights and business in Latin America, as well as discuss the challenges to particular themes, such as access to remedies for corporate human rights abuses, extractivism and renewable energies, and land rights and indigenous people’s rights.
The first episode analysed the Latin American Experiences on Business, Human Rights and Reparation Mechanisms. The event was moderated by Libia Arenal Lora (Lecturer at Universidad de Sevilla and Director of Fundación APY Solidaridad) and the speakers were Luis Rodríguez-Piñero Royo (Human Rights Officer at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights), Humberto Cantú Rivera (Executive Director of Instituto de Derechos Humanos y Empresas and Professor at Universidad de Monterrey), Florencia S. Wegher Osci (PhD Candidate and lecturer at Universidad Nacional del Litoral), Danielle Anne Pamplona (Professor at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná) and Miguel Ángel Barboza López (Lawyer and Coordinator of the Rule of Law Programme for Latin American at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation).

The second episode was entitled Extractivism, renewable energies and human rights in Latin America. The event was moderated by Professor Céline da Graça Pires (PhD Candidate at Nova School of Law and business and human rights specialist at Business for Social Responsibility) and the speakers were Diana Figueroa Prado (Central America & the Caribbean Researcher & Representative at the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre), Julian Tole Martínez (Director of the Observatorio Latinoamericano de Derechos humanos y Empresas de la Universidad Externado de Colombia) and Manuel Núñez Poblete (Professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso).

The third episode focused on Business, land relations and indigenous peoples in Latin America. The event was moderated by Anna Luisa Walter de Santana (Professor at Universidad de los Andes and member of the Executive board of Academia Latinoamericana de Derechos Humanos y Empresas) and the speakers were Mariana Monteiro de Matos (Postdoctoral Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology), Salvador Herencia Carrasco (Director of the Human Rights Clinic at the University of Ottawa) and Iván Leonardo Martínez Pinilla (Professor at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali).
