Students’ Call to Support the CSDDD

Following the initiative of a group of Business and Human Rights professionals to circulate a letter in support of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD),  this initiative comes from the students of NOVA School of Law to express their support to the Directive, as the decisive vote of the Council of the European Union’s on the CSDDD is taking place this Friday, 9 February 2024.

The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) was proposed by the European Commission on the 23th of February 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted a general approach on the legislation on the 30th of November 2022, and the European Parliament adopted its amendments on the 1th of June 2023. After several rounds of negotiations, the Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the text of the legislation on the 14th of December of 2023, which still needed to be endorsed and adopted.

This Friday, on the 9th of February 2024, the Council of the European Union’s is voting on the CSDDD, and independently of the current version and form of the CSDDD, this Directive is crucial to foster sustainable and responsible corporate behaviour, and should not be undermined.

The Directive is a powerful tool to ensure human rights and environmental considerations will be incorporated in companies’ own operations, the ones of their subsidiaries and of the business partners throughout their value chain. In turn, it aims at fostering more transparency, a healthier environment for the present and future generations, and a better protection of human rights will be secured. Concurrently, the CSDDD will create a level playing field for corporations and a harmonised legal framework, facilitating businesses to conduct a sustainable and ethical activity.

This letter, which is directed towards the Council of the European Union, encourages students to express their support on the CSDDD and urges EU governments to move forward with the CSDDD project.
