The NOVA BHRE was interviewed by the Portuguese Journal Vida Judiciária. In the interview, the NOVA BHRE explained its mission and the main pillars of its work. It also explored the various initiatives carried out by the centre, including its collaboration with companies in the implementation of human rights policies and due diligence processes on human rights and the environment. Finally, it highlighted the challenges and opportunities of embracing human rights in the business context, as well as the Centre’s plans for future development.
The interview is available in Portuguese in the January-February 2024 edition of the journal Vida Judiciária.
This project aims to analyze to what extent strategic litigation in business and human rights serves as a measure of resistance and empowerment for victims and as a catalyst to articulate political and legislative actions to ensure respect for human rights and environmental protection in the context of business activities.
The NOVA BHRE participated in the Business and Human Rights Summer School which took place at Temple University in Rome between the 17th and the 21st of June as Claire Bright co-delivered a class with Angelica Bonfanti on ‘Protecting Human Rights throughout the Value Chain: HRDD-aligned contracts’. The NOVA BHRE co-led the initiative of a group of Business and Human Rights professionals and scholars in support of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), as the decisive vote of the Council of the European Union’s on the CSDDD is taking place soon. The initiative gathered other 300 signatures and was followed by the similar initiatives launched by the students of the NOVA BHRE.
In October and November 2023, OECD Watch and NOVA BHRE co-organised a blog symposium intended to facilitate a platform for knowledge exchange and discussion on the updated Guidelines and its connection to – and coherence with – legislative initiatives focused on corporate accountability across the globe. This compendium includes all blogs published for the symposium.

On the 24th and 25th of October 2023, the University of Helsinki organised a conference as part of the LEXSECURE project on ‘Unpacking the Role of Law in Value Chain Resilience’ in the framework of which Claire Bright delivered a keynote speech on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence: Opportunities and Challenges.

On the 25th of September, the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian hosted the International Conference organised by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Internationalization in the framework of which Claire Bright participated in a panel to present the legal and regulatory framework applicable to Portuguese exporting SMEs in relations to ESG requirements.

On 23rd of June 2023, the NOVA BHRE participated in the second edition of the human rights course organized by HeforShe Lisboa in the framework of its Academy.
On 15th of June 2023, Laura Íñigo Álvarez participated in the I Workshop Brasil-Portugal: Paz, Direitos humanos e Empresas organised by professors Ana Luiza da Gama e Souza e Lara Denise Góes da Costa at Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro with the support of the International Peace Research Association Foundation (IPRAF). Laura presented her research on “Business and human rights in situations of armed conflict: towards corporate due diligence”.

On the 30th of May 2023, the Seminar “Business in conflict and post-conflict situations: towards a responsible business conduct” organised by Laura Íñigo Álvarez took place at NOVA School of Law. It featured Olena Uvarova, Dr. Jelena Aparac, Jeremy Sarkin, Riccardo Riva as well as Laura Íñigo Álvarez, with opening notes by Margarida Lima Rego and Claire Bright, and concluding remarks by Felipe Pathé Duarte.
On the 4th and 5th of May 2023, Laura Íñigo Álvarez, postdoctoral researcher and scientific coordinator of the NOVA BHRE, participated as a speaker in the Research workshop “Corporate human rights responsibility in OECD case law: actors, issues, responsibilities and remedies” which took place at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen Nürnberg.

On the 6th of April, Laura Íñigo Álvarez spoke at the Socio-Legal Studies Association Annual Conference at Ulster University’s Magee campus in the city of Derry-Londonderry. She presented her paper entitled “Corporate human rights due diligence in conflict and post-conflict situations: towards a responsible exit” in the Panel Session on Human Rights and War.

On the 14th of February 2023, Claire Bright participated in a side session on Contracts and Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) Legislation moderated by Sarah Dadush as part of this year’s OECD Garment Forum.
On the 7th of February, Laura Íñigo Álvarez delivered a talk at the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies entitled “Heightened human rights due diligence: should companies operating in Russia stay or leave?”.

On 16 January 2023, the NOVA BHRE hosted an early career workshop co-organised by Leonard Feld on the Draft EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence.
On the 12th of December 2022, the NOVA BHRE delivered an awareness-raising training session, in partnership with PLMJ to the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the regulatory developments and challenges on corporate sustainability due diligence. Over 130 participants attended the session.

On the 19th of October, The NOVA BHRE participated in the Green Summit Portugal 2022, as Claire Bright, Natália Galvão Veiga Rebelo (Ikea), Rita Rendeiro (Maingreen Capital Partners), and Bruno Ferreira (PLMJ) discussed how to accelerate the green transition through corporate sustainability due diligence and co-operation in relation to sustainable practice and strategy.
On the 18th of October, The NOVA BHRE was delighted to deliver this training session as part of the training programme ‘Transforming Portuguese Companies in Sustainability Leaders” organised in partnership with PLMJ and with the support of the Confederação Empresarial de Portugal as Claire Bright, Inês Crispim, Bruno Ferreira and Céline da Graça Pires discussed the practical implications of the latest legislative developments in France and Germany for Portuguese companies.
